February, 2010 Snaps: Ambient Devices
From the current issue of Beecham Snaps:
A Christmas season print advertisement featured a stock market tracking device. Four inches square, it resembled a digital photoframe. The advertisement included the words: "No subscription or Internet needed; simply power up this electronic stock market tracker and start receiving information wirelessly." The price was $79.50.
With so much recent attention on connected devices such as the Kindle and Apple's iPad, you might wonder how this device works and what business model supports it. It can "easily track the Dow, NASDAQ, S&P 500, or keep tabs on your customized portfolio" and "includes graphs, trend arrows, current market value, and net change" but at no cost, after you've purchased it.
The purchase price is very low compared to the Kindle and iPad. No books are purchased and downloaded to cover network and data costs, true, but the information received is still free of cost.
