Wireless Broadband ‘has major role to play’ in M2M Market Development: M2M Industry Roundtable
London, UK – May 5, 2010. Wireless Broadband has a major role to play in future development of the rapidly-growing M2M market, according to industry experts taking part in an exclusive M2M Roundtable event.
The special M2M Roundtable event, organized by Ericsson and held on March 24, 2010 at the CTIA show in Las Vegas, included senior executives from 11 major M2M market players – AT&T Emerging Devices (Anthony Galichet), Digi (Curt Ahart), Ericsson (Mats Norin), GSMA(Ton Brand), IBM (Joe Ziskin), Intel (Adam Burns), KORE Telematics (Alex Brisbourne), Qualcomm (Ed Tiedemann), Telenor Connexion (Göran Brandt), Wyless (Dan McDuffie) and XATA (Nathan Johnston).
The purpose of the event was to discuss and reach a consensus on three major topics: 1. The Growing Role of Mobile Operators in the M2M Market
2. The Impact of Wireless Broadband in the M2M Market
3. The Growing Need for Open M2M Platforms.
“These are major topics in the development of the M2M market over the next few years, so it is important to gain the views of industry experts – and whether these form a consensus”, said Robin Duke-Woolley, CEO of Beecham Research who moderated the event.
Some of the key messages from this event were as follows:
- In the M2M market, most Mobile Operators are primarily connectivity providers at present. While this is an important role which could very well be a profitable one, there is also an opportunity for Operators to take more control of the M2M value chain and enhance their profitability. This should also enhance overall M2M market development
- The general perception in the market is that 3G is mainly about Consumer applications, whereas in reality 3G is just as much – if not more so – about Business applications
- 3G solves technical issues and has a bigger role to play as it provides efficiency improvements that will benefit all applications
- There is a growing trend for application developers to use third party open platforms rather than continuing to develop their own. Using such platforms is significantly easier and more cost efficient.
Other key messages and quotes from participants arising from this event are now available for free download in a discussion paper at Beecham Research’s website at http://www.beechamresearch.com
“This was a successful first event and we intend to build on it. The purpose was to provide a forum for discussion among industry experts. We anticipate that this Ericsson M2M Roundtable will become a regular feature at CTIA shows and provide a qualitative measure of M2M market development” said Mats Norin, Vice President and Head of Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules.
